TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi claimed that President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has approved the upper and lower thresholds for online taxi tariffs with conditions.
“President Jokowi approves [the upper and lower thresholds for online taxi tariffs  to be applied after a three-month transition process,” Budi said after meeting President Jokowi at the Presidential Palace on Friday, March 31, 2017.
Minister Budi issued Transportation Minister Regulation No. 32/2016 on mass transportation without routes that covers upper and lower thresholds for online transportation tariffs in order to protect conventional taxis.
The original plan was to enact the regulation on April 1, 2017. However, due to protests from the public, Minister Budi decided to discuss the policy with President Jokowi who has never opposed online taxis.
Budi explained that President Jokowi was not against terms set forth in the regulation. However, the minister said that the Transportation Ministry we will conduct an in-depth study on the policy in order to avoid issues in the future.
In response to a question whether President Jokowi provided inputs, Budi said that the president instructed him to protect consumers.
